Extraction Post-Operative instructions

For healing of tooth extraction socket follow these instructions carefully:

During the first 24 hours

Blood clot formation is essential at the site of extraction to stop bleeding, minimize pain, and speedy healing. Bite on a gauze pad placed by surgeon firmly for 30-60 minutes. Dont change gauze pad at home as it is not clean. swallow saliva to stop bleeding. 

Don’t spit and don’t take any hot liquid or hot meal

Avoid sucking any food

Avoid mouth wash/rinse

Avoid brushing the tooth next to the extraction site.

Don’t smoke as clot will get dislodged

Avoid tobacco as it slows healing

If antibiotics are prescribed take them as prescribed by surgeon

Take pain killer before before the effect of anesthetic goes away

Avoid any hot fomentation of face on the same site of extraction as it will cause swelling 

eat soft, cold diet (fluids, rice, dalia, Khichdi) from the opposite site

Don't touch the extraction site with finger, tongue

After the first 24 hours

start warm saline gargles 5-6 times a day 

Gently brush the teeth, but clean carefully around the socket for 7 days

Eat semisolid if comfortable

Continue pain killer and antibiotics as prescribed

if sutures are placed around the site get them removed on 7th day 

Consult your dental surgeon:

in case sharp pain/ swelling occurs on the third day
